Automated Dynamic Headspace

Controlled and stabil analysis

With the GERSTEL DHS option, dynamic headspace can be 100% automated.
The DHS station completely extracts, concentrates and injects VOC and/or SVOCs from liquid or solid samples placed in standard Headspace vials.

The sample is thermostatted and agitated while the headspace is purged with a controlled flow of inert gas, providing controlled and efficient extraction conditions.

The DHS station also holds the replaceable adsorbent- or sorbent filled tube used for analyte concentration.

Thermostating on collection

Sample temperatures can be selected from 10 °C to 200 °C.

The temperature of the adsorbent tube during the DHS process can be varied from 20 °C to 70 °C for optimal trapping of the analytes in question.

Collection and more

Adsorbent tubes used are standard GERSTEL Thermal Desorption Unit TDU tubes filled with Tenax/Carbopack/Carbotrap of your choice. Following analyte concentration, the tube is automatically transferred to the TDU for Thermal Desorption and analyte transfer to the GC.

Tubes are fitted with individual adapters enabling both automated movement and leak-free sealing during the Dynamic Headspace and Thermal Desorption steps and during storage in the autosampler tray.

DHS "in action"

In this video you will see a presentation of the full automatic steps included in Gerstel Dynamic Headspace on an Agilent GC-MS system.

Dynamic Headspace benefits:

  • The method-of-choice in the Food industry.
  • The GERSTEL Dynamic Headspace provides much lower detection limits than static headspace, SPME and other widely used techniques
  • Productivity like static headspace through complete automatization of the entire extraction process.
  • Sensitivity in the high ppt range with MS detectors, down to the low ppt range with selective detectors, e.g. PFPD
    • Highest flexibility: User defined extraction time, flow, temperature and adsorbent
  • The Dynamic Headspace technology provides multiple water management options to ensure best chromatography and MS stability
  • By increasing the temperature of the sample vial, the DHS can used in “fully extractive” mode. In this way, phthalates/parabens can easily be seen in difficult matrices.
  • The entire pathway contains no tubing or valves. The adsorbent is moved to the sample and hereafter to the injector. Your system will also work when becoming old.
